What to pack in your kit bag whilst exercising on your period

Exercising on your period might seem like a bit of a mad idea (moving while bleeding, are you joking?) but honestly, trust us. Sure, there might be days when you don’t want to move off the sofa, but the science says that exercise can be super helpful with curbing cramps and boosting your mood. So, if you do fancy getting active whilst on your period, our Big Sisters have pulled together a list of all the essentials you need to make sure you feel comfortable and prepared.

1. Period products

Even if you’re not on your period, it’s a good idea to keep some period products in your kit bag just in case you unexpectedly start your period or if a friend needs to borrow a pad/tampon. Whilst on your period and exercising, it’s good to think about what period product you’re most comfortable with and would prefer to use whilst exercising. Take a look at our ‘Periods and exercise’ page to learn more about disposable and reusable products.

2. Spare clothes

It can be a good idea to bring some spare clothes so that you can change into alternative clothes if needed. Whilst on your period you might decide that you’d prefer to wear slightly different kit to normal to help you feel more comfortable. Some girls prefer to wear tighter-fitting shorts or bottoms for more support with pads or dark-coloured shorts/bottoms in case of any leakage, whilst some others find slightly looser garments more comfortable to wear when exercising during their period. Remember, we’re all different so go for the type of clothes that you think work best for you when exercising during your cycle.

3. Water

Whether you’re on your period or not, it’s always important to stay hydrated, especially whilst exercising. Being hydrated is necessary for many important bodily functions to take place.

4. Portable hot water bottle

Periods can be painful and although, for many, exercising can relieve some of this pain, you may find it helpful to have some products with you that can also help if any pain arises.

5. Snacks

Foods high in sugar and saturated fat can worsen symptoms experienced during your period so a healthy snack, like some fruit, is great for before/after exercising. Eating foods high in iron, such as nuts and dried apricots, is also important as we lose iron through menstrual bleeding.

Craving a bit of chocolate? We’ve got good news! Dark chocolate has iron, magnesium and zinc which are all important nutrients for your body during your period.

6. Spare underwear

Leaks happen. It’s really not a big deal and happens to all of us! So, it’s good to be prepared whilst exercising by packing an extra pair of underwear to change into if needed.

7. Wet wipes

A small pack of wet wipes can also be a helpful addition to your kit for cleaning any leaks and helping you to feel fresh if you can’t take a shower straight after exercising.
